Bailey Smith’s mental health plea

By Russell Bennett

Cats superstar Bailey Smith took the opportunity in his post-match interview with Seven to make a plea for the AFL to introduce a men’s mental health round, following the tragic death of Crows skipper Jordan Dawson’s older brother Jaryd, and Elijah Hollands’ mental health episode on Thursday night.

“There’s one thing I want to touch on, which is maybe out of pocket, but I just want to shout out the Dawson family this week and Elijah Hollands last night,” he said.

“I don’t know if I’m out of pocket saying it, but I think it’s about time the AFL get a men’s mental health round.

“It makes you feel sick during the week, and hopefully the AFL community wraps our arms around them and we can do something.

“I think the footy world can be quite toxic at times, and it is [also] good at putting our arms around the people who need it most, when we need to.

“Speak to your mates, [and] put your arm around your loved ones – you never know who might need it.”

Smith laid bare his own struggles with anxiety and his efforts to restore his mental health after he fell into “quite a bad spiral” during his recovery from a serious knee injury in 2024.

‘He’s got broad shoulders’: Cox backs Curnow to deal with criticism after derby win

By

Swans coach Dean Cox has backed star forward Charlie Curnow to keep shrugging off criticism from sections of the media after the forward kicked three goals in the team’s 41-point Sydney Derby victory over the Giants at the SCG.

“When good players certainly move to a club, they’re expected to perform really well every week,” Cox said.

“That’s the nature of the beast, and Charlie’s role has been a new one within our football club, and he’s still getting used to players up the ground and how we move the ball. I think it’s about him and the collective, as I’ve always said.

“Charlie’s no different tonight, it was great to see him get on the end of it and get some reward for effort.

Bulldogs stars hurt as Cameron fires Cats to big win

By

A knee injury to Western Bulldogs star Sam Darcy overshadowed Jeremy Cameron’s 10 goals in a stunning performance by Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night.

Darcy fell to the ground clutching his left knee as he led out towards the ball during the second quarter before the Bulldogs suffered further carnage on the injury front with Tom Liberatore concussed and key defenders James O’Donnell and Rory Lobb both injuring their hamstrings in their side’s 75-point loss, 19.17 (131) to 8.8 (56).

The Bulldogs’ shocking run overshadowed the Cats’ brilliant performance as they annihilated their opponents from start to finish with Cameron kicking seven goals in the first half to help his team to a 57-point lead at half-time.

Full-time: Swans win by 41 points

By

The Swans have beaten the Giants by 41 points after shaking down the thunder from the sky and an hour-and-four-minute lightning delay.

We have passed the 11pm curfew time in Moore Park, so comically the Swans’ victory song was played on a lower volume.

In 32 editions of the Sydney derby, this was definitely one of the scrappiest, not helped by the delay, nor the conditions. Without really getting out of fourth gear, the Swans still won with game with ease.

There was a brief revival for the Giants in the third term, but they couldn’t capitalise on their scoring opportunities.

Swans have just about put this game to bed

Malcolm Rosas has extended the Swans’ lead and is proving to be a serious recruit after arriving from the Gold Coast Suns.

The Giants are not quite out of this game, with Clayton Oliver their outstanding player, leading with 28 disposals.

Nick Blakey follows up with a goal and that’s the ball game, surely, with a 25-point lead for the Swans at this point.

Charlie Curnow’s third goal all but seals it for the Swans.

Amartey kicks truly

By

That’s a really nice goal for Joel Amartey from a tight angle and that’s his second for the night.

The key forward is really enjoying working with Charlie Curnow and, if he can stay injury-free, this could be the best season of this career so far.

Finn Callaghan responds with a goal for the Giants, but it’s surely too late now. He’s keeping them alive, but there’s barely a pulse.

Saying that, Leek Aleer has just kicked the first goal of his AFL career.

Giants Nick Madden with a candidate for worst miss of the season

By

That’s one of the worst misses of the season – young Giants ruckman Nick Madden somehow missing straight in front, five metres out, with his team desperately trying to chase down the Swans’ 18-point lead.

Giants forward Jake Stringer then missed a far more difficult opportunity, but time is running out for an unlikely comeback.

The Giants will be frustrated; they had plenty of opportunities to chase down the Swans but didn’t take up any of them.

Three goals for Riccardi

By

There’s the third goal for Jake Riccardi, and it all came from a long sprint from Toby Bedford, who somehow juggled the ball on the slippery turf.

The Swans’ Tom Papley immediately replies with a goal to extend his team’s lead to 21 points.

We’ve just heard it’s the biggest crowd of the season here, with 43,986 fans through the gates.

Curnow gets his second

By

Charlie Curnow won’t get many easier goals than that – kicking it through from just five metres out.

The Swans needed that, with the Giants looking a lot of fresher in the third quarter.

Logan McDonald then slots his second goal, sparking the first melee of the game, which wakes up the crowd after the hour-long lightning delay.

The Giants fight back

By

Last July, in the previous Sydney derby, the Giants were down by 35 points late in the second term, only to come back to win.

They’re facing a far smaller deficit here at the start of the third term, but with the ball skidding all over the wet field with a wind howling, they need to get going.

This is definitely not a good spectacle – it’s super scrappy by both teams.

And there’s the goal the Giants deserved, through Toby Bedford. It’s game on.
